Rhayn Jooste
Rhayn is a player and composer who is interested in musical spontaneity and improvisation. It is the pure joy of using music to create a magical world which others can share in that inspires him to play. His repertoire is wide, ranging from Elizabethan Broadside Ballads to modern works such as Libra Sonatine; from jazz standards to Piazzola's Tangos. He brings to the guitar, a fresh and new approach to interpretation, through his passion and enjoyment of music.
‘ I believe in music as an ancient tradition, one that interlinks all other artist endeavours to broaden the boundaries of human experience.’
History
Rhayn started his musical training in Australia taking part in many competitions for the Victorian Schools Music Association as a drummer and percussionist. He briefly flirted with the trumpet, cello and bass guitar to further his knowledge of harmonic instruments, but finally pursued his first love; guitar.
Beginning his training on the classical guitar at twenty two years of age, with the reputed Neil Smith, he went on to read music at Bath Spa University College. Specialising in performance and composition he graduated with an Honours degree. He studied under Tom Kerstens, James Woodrow and Hayley Savage. He then went on to a Post Graduate Diploma in performance at the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama, under John Mills and Eleftheria Kotzia. Finally completeing his education at Cardiff University with a Masters degree in Music, Culture and Politics.
Through these establishments he has participated for Gary Ryan, Eric Roche, John Dearman, Tim Walker, Craig Ogden, David Leisner and Leo Brouwer (et al) in Master Classes. Rhayn attended the 2002 Cordoba Guitar Festival in Spain; tutored by Leo Brouwer he gained a Certificate in composition for the guitar.
Taking part in various festivals around the country he performed in the Rondo Theatre Company's open air production of Shakespeare's Much Ado about Nothing and was soloist in the B.S.U.C Concert series for a new work of electric guitar, and broken consort, by Rob Smith. He was also a teacher for the International Guitar Festival out reach programme. This can be found in inner suburban areas, and involves teaching and opening up new possibilities with the guitar.
He has studied renaissance lute under Dr. Matthew Spring and Matthew Nisbit as well as continuo under Dr. Andrew Wilson Dickson.
