Timothy Tate’s passionate, poetic performances have been praised for their musical integrity and depth of atmosphere. Timothy’s sensitive interpretations of his wide ranging repertoire have been warmly acknowledged by distinguished musicians and audiences in various settings from solo engagements to ensemble concerts. He is becoming known as one of Wales’ most sought after specialists of the contemporary classical guitar following his formation of Cardiff New Music Collective.
Timothy Tate was born in Cornwall, England in 1981 and began studying the guitar aged nine. He taught music in South Indian school in 2000 and also took Sitar lessons in Varanasi. Timothy studied with John Mills and Chris Stell at the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama, Cardiff and with Sven Lundestad at the Norwegian Academy of Music, Oslo in 2003. After graduating with a distinction in performance he gained a Masters degree in performance during which he researched the role of the classical guitar in contemporary music. Whilst at college he won various awards including the BMus Year Prize for highest marks, and in 2005 he won the John Mills Prize for most outstanding performance in competition.
As a soloist Timothy Tate gave the first guitar recital at the Wales Millennium Centre, Cardiff, and performed at the Bolivar Hall London, the International Guitar Festivals of Charlton Kings, West Dean and Bath for which he won scholarships to attend, and for numerous recitals for guitar and music societies across the UK including Bristol, Cardiff, Swansea, Brecon, Southampton, Harlech and Westbury. Timothy has also played in masterclasses for such luminaries as John Williams, David Russell, Mark Ashford, David Leisner and Timothy Walker.
Timothy’s passion for performing music of our time has been recognised by composers who have dedicated works to him including Jayson Mackie’s Unearthing Treasures (to be published by Oriana Publications) and Glass Mosaics, and in 2005 chairman of ‘Composers of Wales’ Andrew Wilson-Dickson’s http://www.wmic.org/cgi-bin/composerfull.cgi?id=311 Concerto for guitar and chamber ensemble, which Timothy premiered in Canton Uniting Church, Cardiff with ensemble In transit.
As an accomplished and dedicated chamber musician Timothy performs with various duos including tenor, flute and the cellist Junyan Liu, with whom he played for the Singaporean Prime Minister in London. Timothy’s performance at the 2004 William Walton Festival in Oldham attended by Lady Walton was followed by an invitation to perform at her estate on Ischia, Italy the following April. Whilst at college he was the guitarist with the conservatoire’s Millennium Ensemble and performed works by John Adams and Frank Zappa, and went on to found a mixed ensemble dedicated to performing and commissioning works, and reaching new audiences with contemporary music.

Since their formation in 2003, Timothy has been resident guitarist with the chamber ensemble In transit (www.intransit.moonfruit.com) who are rapidly becoming known across Wales as the foremost young contemporary ensemble. They have been invited to return to the Wales Millennium Centre in March 2006 to give the world premiere of a new work by pianist and composer Keith Tippett (www.mindyourownmusic.co.uk/keith-tippett.htm) commissioned by the ensemble following the award of a grant from the Arts Council of Wales. Recent performances have excited press and packed audiences at the Wales Millennium Centre, Canton Uniting Church, Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama and Chapter Arts Centre, Cardiff; they also appeared live on the S.T.A.R. radio arts project.
The group have worked with Diversions the National Dance Company of Wales and theatre group Ruth is Stranger Than Richard, recording a newly commissioned score for a production of Samuel Beckett plays funded by the Arts Council in 2005. In Transit also perform in art galleries alongside exhibitions. Such recent performances have included G39 in Cardiff and Oriel Glynn Vivian in Swansea where they performed music relating to the touring exhibition 'You Never Know', exploring the element of chance.
In addition to giving the world premieres of numerous works dedicated to their unique ensemble of cello, clarinet, flute, guitar, piano and viola since their debut concert in 2004, the group is also the ensemble of the Cardiff New Music Collective, (www.cnmc.moonfruit.com) a group of composers whose works are regularly featured in the ensemble’s concerts.
The ensemble is also available to perform traditional repertoire at weddings and functions in various combinations such as guitar and cello, guitar and flute, string quartet and diverse pairings with piano. The group is involved in educational work in outreach projects taking music and workshops to schools and community groups and recent work has included a tour of schools in West Wales.
Timothy Tate is based in Cardiff, Wales, gives solo and duo recitals, performs with ensemble In transit, and plays at weddings and functions. He also teaches privately and for the Cardiff County Music Service.
This artist also plays guitars for Sweet Baboo (www.sweetbaboo.co.uk) with whom he recently gave a critically acclaimed performance at the 2005 Green Man Festival which led to an appearance on national Welsh TV.
